The Nokia 3310 is back.

The iconic smartphone have enjoyed a much-needed refresh, and was revealed to a rapturous reception at Mobile World Congress 2017 last weekend.

However this retro device was not the only release from Nokia, as the company also unveiled a whole range of new smartphones as it officially launched its big comeback.

The new devices all mean that Nokia is back in the big time – and for anyone in the UK looking to get their hands on any of the smartphones, including the Nokia 3310, there is some very good news.

Kodi Box BAN – Using your Kodi Box could soon be ILLEGAL, and this is why

USING a Kodi Box could soon be illegal, following a fresh round of discussions from the UK’s Intellectual Property Office about how best to tackle copyright and fraud caused by these hugely-popular streaming boxes.

Watching content on a Kodi Box could soon be illegal.

Following a growing number of complaints from right-holders and broadcasters, the UK’s Intellectual Property Office, or IPO, is purportedly holding a number of meetings to decide whether the law needs to be changed to tackle the popularity of Kodi boxes.

There have already been a number of arrests due to Kodi boxes in the UK.

Five people accused of selling illegally modified versions of the popular set-top boxes were taken into custody last month after a series of early morning raids.

Cases are pending, but there is clearly a focus on these boxes.

For those who do not know, Kodi is an open-source media player that’s available to install on a range of devices.

4K Apple TV box is in the works (and that fabled TV service may yet live)

$

It’s been the glaring omission on the Apple TV spec sheet for years, but a new report suggests a 4K Apple TV may finally be in the works.

That’s according to long-time Apple tipster Mark Gurman, reporting for Bloomberg that “people familiar with the matter” have revealed a “renewed focus” on the Cupertino company’s set-top box.

Potentially ready for release as soon as this year, the box is currently said to be in testing under the codename “J105”, and will support ultra-high definition 4K streaming – potentially even HDR content, given the mention of “vivid colors” in the report.

The Amazon effect

The renewed interest in the Apple TV comes in the wake of the appointment of former Amazon Fire TV executive Timothy D. Twerdhal. Apple has lost ground to its Amazon rival, as its drive for greater margins pushes hardware costs high, with Amazon preferring to make its money back through services.

It’s an interesting, if somewhat surprising, position from Apple given the success or its smartphone App Store, and one that has seemingly alienated the staff it has working on the Apple TV product. According to the Bloomberg report, there are grumbles among staff who had hoped to make a “revolutionary” device, but “got evolutionary.”

Still, there’s some hope that previous rumored features may yet make a return. Apple TV has long been linked with a cable TV service from Apple – while that full-fat approach may never see the light of day, a web-based, channel-by-channel subscription service could still appear with the arrival of Twerdhal and his predecessor hammering out content deals.

Streaming media players suitable for home

$

Streaming media players like the Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast might seem more at home in the lounge room than the boardroom, but these tiny wireless gadgets offer a great way to fling presentations and other content around your office.

No matter how articulate you are in the boardroom, sometimes it’s more powerful to show people what you mean rather than just talking them through it. A new generation of slick presentation tools have helped us escape from PowerPoint hell, but there’s still the challenge of getting your presentation up on the big screen.

It’s easy to spend a lot of money setting up an expensive networked multimedia system in your office, but before you splash some cash it’s worth considering whether a simple streaming media player like the Apple TV or Google’s Chromecast could be the solution to your problems.

They’re best known as the easiest way to get streaming video services like Netflix into your lounge room, but these devices also let you mirror the desktop from your computer, smartphone or tablet. You can plug a player into any monitor, television or projector with an HDMI video port, giving it a wireless overhaul so it’s easy to fling video to it. This is even more convenient if you regularly waste time during meetings waiting for one person to relinquish control of the big screen while the next person fumbles with the cables they need to connect.

As you’d expect, the Apple TV is a very Apple-centric device, designed to play nicely with iPhones, iPads and Macs using Apple’s AirPlay streaming format. You can easily mirror the screen from any of these Apple devices, and many iOS apps have built-in AirPlay video support.

If you’re only interested in AirPlay then an old third generation Apple TV should do the job, and you’ll find them for less than $100. The newer fourth generation Apple TV starts at $239, but in return you gain the ability to run a wide range of third-party apps.

There’s no official Android support for AirPlay. You’ll find third-party apps in the Google Play store that support AirPlay video streaming, such as Allcast, AppleTV AirPlay Media Player and AirScreen – AirPlay & iTunes, but the results can be hit and miss.

Meanwhile Google’s Chromecast is more flexible—it’s designed to mirror the screen from an Android device, Windows PC or Mac, plus mirroring is built into the Chrome desktop browser. You’ll pick up the Chromecast for around $59, or you can step up to the $99 Chromecast Ultra, which supports Ultra HD resolution.

Streaming to a Chromecast from an iGadget is slightly less convenient. You can’t mirror the screen but you can mirror Chromecast-compatible apps—not just multimedia apps like Netflix and YouTube, but also Google’s apps like Google Slides for presentations and Google Photos for images and video clips.

Choosing between Google’s Chromecast and the Apple TV comes down to what devices you’ll need to connect—you might even decide it’s worth having one of each. Once they’re set up, it’s simple to get your big ideas up on the big screen in the office.

A universal TV box tries to untangle cord-cutters’ confusion

Caavo, introduced at the Code Media conference here, proposes to be a master box for all those growing set-top boxes and devices in the home— Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, Amazon Fire, as well as the cable box.

The $399 unit will ship in the fall, the company says.

“We wanted to solve the living room problem, where you have many different devices coming at the television,” says co-founder Andrew Einaudi.

With more and more original programming for streaming services, a big issue for consumers is keeping track of what show is available on which box. For instance, “Mozart in the Jungle” is an Amazon exclusive, and only available for viewing on Amazon’s Fire or Roku, not Apple TV or Chromecast, while Apple iTunes movies can’t be seen on Chromecast or Roku.

The idea is to plug the Caavo into one HDMI port on the TV, and put all the boxes into the 8 HDMI ports on the back of the unit.

One advantage that Einaudi showed off here is voice search. Yes, you can use Siri with Apple TV, but Amazon’s Alexa doesn’t work. However, with Caavo, you can use Alexa to control Apple TV, Chromecast and even your regular TV channels.

Caavo raised $15 million in venture capital from DCM, Greylock Partners, Sky and Hearst. The idea was hatched by the late Blake Krikorian, the co-founder of Sling TV.

“When he told me his idea for how to solve this age-old problem, I knew he was on to something special,” wrote David Sze, a partner with Greylock, on the company blog.

Based on the demo Caavo showed here, the box could solve a lot of problems for those who don’t know where a particular show is playing. But after spending $149 for Apple TV, $100 for Roku and $89 for Fire TV, will consumers really want to fork over even more money for a universal box?

Sze says he sees Caavo as “an innovative solution to bring entertainment devices and services together into one seamless experience.”

Hartlepool man pleads guilty to selling ‘fully loaded’ illegal TV boxes

$

A Hartlepool man who sold illegal media player boxes which allowed the free viewing of premium television content has pleaded guilty to breaching the Copyright, Designs & Patents Act 1988.

Malcolm Mayes, sold IPTV boxes, sometimes referred to as ‘Kodi’ boxes or ‘Android’ boxes, which had been modified to allow the users to freely view content that should otherwise be paid for. When a box has been modified in this way it is often described as being ‘fully loaded’.

Mr Mayes targeted pubs and clubs when selling the devices, falsely claiming in national magazine adverts that they were ‘100% legal’. He sold the boxes for around £1,000 each which enabled his customers to stream live ‘pay to view’ content, including live Premier League football, free of charge.

National Trading Standards conducted a test purchase on a device sold by Mr Mayes and found the box had been adapted so as to allow ‘pay to view’ programmes to be viewed free of charge.

Following his guilty plea at Teesside Crown Court, Mr Mayes was sentenced to ten months in prison (suspended for one year) and ordered to pay costs of £170,000. A Proceeds of Crime Act order was also made against him for a further £80,000.

Commenting on the conviction Lord Toby Harris, Chair of National Trading Standards, said:

“Mr Mayes knowingly sold these illegal boxes which breached copyright law, misleading small businesses by falsely claiming that these devices were legal. I hope this conviction sends a clear message that criminal activity doesn’t pay.

“I would also warn any person or business selling or operating such a device that they are in breach of copyright law. National Trading Standards will continue to protect legitimate business and pursue those who breach copyright in this way.”

Ian Harrison, Trading Standards & Licensing Manager for Hartlepool Borough Council said:

“The cost of this case has been significant to Mr Mayes. In pleading guilty he has accepted that it is illegal to sell a device that allows the free viewing of ‘pay to view’ television. This is common sense and should be obvious to anyone.

“Mr Mayes should not be seen as a Robin Hood type character. In selling these devices he was not stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. He was stealing from the rich to make himself richer. Many of the pubs and clubs that bought his devices lost significant amounts of money when the devices failed to operate as promised.

“We will continue to target those traders and individuals who make their living from selling counterfeit goods or in other ways allow intellectual property to be stolen.”

WORK OF ART? NOPE – THIS IS CAAVO’S $400 SET-TOP BOX

$

In some ways, there has never been a better time to watch TV: streaming media players are nearly as plentiful as the streaming services available on them, and great content is everywhere. Even so, it’s not uncommon to need more than one streaming box to access all your favorites, and that can be problematic. That’s exactly the problem that Caavo, unveiled yesterday at Recode’s Code Media event, is attempting to solve.

The company’s streaming media player, also named Caavo, aims to unify all of your viewing options via a single interface with one remote, and this integration extends to your streaming media players, game consoles, and your cable box. The 16-inch wide box features eight HDMI inputs, an Ethernet port, two USB ports, and a 3.5mm jack meant to be used for an IR extension cable. This might sound like a glorified HDMI switcher, but the Caavo aims for much more.

Once everything is plugged in, the Caavo autodetects all of your devices. Even better, once you’ve signed into your various accounts, the device pulls everything together in one easily searchable place. Using the voice-enabled remote, you just search for whatever you want to watch, and the device handles it automatically, all without you having to worry about switching inputs.

“Living room entertainment is disjointed, and even within our own homes each of us watches TV differently. It took embracing all of it, in any combination, to make it work together seamlessly,” Caavo co-founder and CEO Andrew Einaudi said in a statement. “This isn’t the future of TV, it’s the way it was always meant to be.”

The company was founded in 2015 by Einaudi, Ashish Aggarwal, Vinod Gopinath, and the late Blake Krikorian. The founders had come from companies like Sling Media, Harman, and others, so if anyone is going to try to tackle this problem — one that companies with much bigger budgets, like Apple, have yet to crack — it seems like Caavo does conceivably have the chops pull it off.

Comcast is bringing Xfinity TV to Roku, but you’ll still need your cable box

If you’re both a Comcast Xfinity TV subscriber and an owner of one or more Roku devices, you’ll soon be able to use one less remote. On Tuesday, Roku and Comcast announced that the two companies would soon be making Xfinity TV available on Roku streaming media players via a new Xfinity TV app, now entering a public beta.

The Xfinity TV app will allow you to watch both live and on-demand programming, as well as your cloud DVR recordings, just as they would with their Comcast-provided set-top box. In fact, you essentially are watching via your set-top box, since this isn’t streaming over the internet. Instead, it uses a secure private managed network to stream from your Xfinity box to your Roku.

While the Xfinity TV app won’t be available on every single Roku model, it’s pretty close. The app will be available on all Roku TVs, as well as the Roku 2, Roku 3, Roku 4, Roku Streaming Stick, Roku Express and Express+, Roku Premiere and Premiere+, and Roku Ultra. If your particular model isn’t listed above, there still could be hope, as the companies say that they will be working to support more players throughout the beta period.

The announcement of this beta isn’t a total surprise, as we’ve known that Comcast was working toward a Roku app since April of last year, when the company announced the Xfinity TV Partner Program. Roku wasn’t the only partner mentioned: Xfinity TV support was also announced for Samsung Smart TVs at the time.

Sky halts Plex side-loading on Now TV boxes by nixing developer mode

In a blog post on the Now TV forums (spotted by Engadget) the company explained the quiet update was designed to halt piracy.
Now TV Box 19

“The latest update has been designed to safeguard the device from piracy and illegal streaming of content; therefore it will disable the use of unofficial third party software or apps,” community manager Karl-F wrote.

“This will not affect your ability to watch NOW TV or download supported apps through the Channel Store.”

The Now TV box, of course, is just a re-branded Roku designed to promote Sky’s on demand streaming platforms alongside terrestrial platforms like iPlayer and 4oD.

Related: Now TV vs Roku 2

However, a small community of users had chosen to enact developer mode and install apps like the Plex Media Centre, opening the box up to a much wider range of content.

The revoking of that right has left some users (who, let’s not forget, forked out a whopping ten quid for the box) rather angry.

“Well unless you can confirm Plex will be available in the app store then it’s definitely goodbye Now TV,” wrote Raevelyn. “I’ll likely invest in a proper Roku box, but i wont be subscribing to Now TV on it. That’s me done!”

Others pointed out that you could still side-load on “proper” Rokus and pledged their loyalty to the manufacturer.

The Now TV box still represents solid value for customers simply seeking a bit of catch-up telly with on-demand access to the football, or new movie releases.

However, it lacks access to the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime and does so by design.

Ultra HD and 4K television – explained

$
0
0

What is Ultra HD/4K and what is 4K TV?

The new Ultra HD/4K picture format increases the resolution of TV pictures from the 1920×1080 pixels used for today’s HD broadcasts to a whopping 3840×2160 pixels.

This means it has four times the amount of detail as HD and eight times as much detail as standard definition.

The technology is based on the Ultra HD standard used for projecting movies in digital cinemas, and it’s not just about the higher resolution – in the future Ultra HD will also support much higher frame rates to allow for smother motion in video footage.

Why buy a Ultra HD or 4K TV?

The huge jump in picture resolution means that when you’re looking at a Ultra HD up close you’ll be able to see incredible amounts of detail, from fine lines on leaves in nature programs to individual faces in the crowd at sporting events.

During an Arsenal football match, Sony put adverts on blades of grass and boot studs, which could only be seen with a Ultra HD-ready TV.

TV broadcasts today are at a frame rate of 25 – and have been at this rate since the 1960s. BT Sport Ultra HD will deliver action at 50 frames per second, a significant step change that will give viewers much sharper pictures and less motion blur.

This should be especially noticeable on Ultra coverage of fast-paced sports such as football or motor racing, where camera pans will look much smoother and less blurred.

How do I watch Ultra HD/4K?

You won’t be able to watch Ultra HD on your current TV. Instead, you’ll need a Ultra HD-ready TV, which are available from a number of manufacturers including Sony, LG, Panasonic and Samsung. The BT Shop has lots to choose from.

Once you’ve got the set you’ll need to find some Ultra HD content to watch.

BT has launched Europe’s first Ultra HD channel, which will show Champions League, Premier League and Aviva Premiership Rugby in Ultra HD/4K and Dolby Atmos sound.

In order to watch it you’ll need BT’s YouView+ Ultra HD box, which is available now. Find out more about how to get BT Sport Ultra HD.

Apple TV 5 latest rumours – UK release date, price, features, specifications

$
0
0

A new Apple TV, capable of playing 4K content, may launch this year, according to a Bloomberg report.

This fifth-generation Apple TV, codenamed J105, will also offer “more vivid” colours, according to Bloomberg’s sources.

As for when in 2017 the new Apple TV will launch, it seems most likely that a new Apple TV box would launch in September alongside new iPhones and a new iOS operating system (as it’s likely that the new Apple TV will use new features in iOS 11 – read about iOS 11 here.) Mini PC News

However, the Apple TV first went on sale in March 2007, so a tenth anniversary launch in March 2017 would be pertinent.

While Apple tends to dislike historical wallowing – famously refusing to build a museum in its new headquarters because “we’re focused on the future, not the past” – we think there is a precedent for an anniversary product in the form of the Twentieth Anniversary Mac (number 4 in our article The 5 weirdest Macs of all time). What do you think?

How much will the Apple TV 5 cost in the UK?

$
0
0

The Apple TV currently retails at £139 for the 32GB version, and £179 for the 64GB version. That’s more than twice the price of its predecessor. Until October 2016 Apple also sold the third generation (2012) Apple TV for £59. This unit offered less functionality than the newer model – specifically it lacked the TV App Store and the wealth of apps that bought, however its price was more akin to the prices of competing set top boxes (we look at a number of the competitors to the Apple TV here).

As the above referenced article outlines, competing gadgets such as Amazon’s Fire TV (£79.99), Google’s Chromecast Ultra (£69) and Nexus Player (£79) and Roku’s Streaming Stick (£49) cost a lot less than Apple’s offering. We think that Apple should drop the entry price of the new model. Mini PC News

We predict that there will be three Apple TV boxes available at three different price points, based on the idea that Apple will offer a lower priced entry level model to make up for the fact that it no longer sells the third generation model:

  • 32GB £99 ($99)
  • 64GB £139 ($149)
  • 128GB £179 ($199)

One of Apple’s customs is to continue to sell an older model as the lower priced entry level option. For that reason we anticipate that Apple may continue to sell the 2015 Apple TV as the entry level model.
