But those using the Kodi name to promote streaming copyrighted material are facing legal action for trademark abuse.

Living rooms around the globe are likely to have a device running Kodi because it is so easy to run on Smart TVs.

The problem is that Kodi is just a media player, it carries no content.

However, it has the ability to run third-party plugins that in many instances make infringing content available to the user.

So, when people load Kodi with plugins recommended by a friend and see the latest movies listed, they believe that Kodi – and the people behind Kodi – are the ones providing them with the movies.

Not only is it already wrongly associated with an ever-increasing amount of infringing activity, the installed add-ons often break or do not function as advertised. When users get problems they head off to the Kodi forums and vent.

The recent media spotlight on the arrests of five people in England for selling pre-loaded Kodi set-top boxes worth £250,000 has led the team to update its list of add-ons that are not associated with the Kodi brand.

1. Starting up

USING a Kodi Box could soon be illegal, following a fresh round of discussions from the UK’s Intellectual Property Office about how best to tackle copyright and fraud caused by these hugely-popular streaming boxes.

Following a growing number of complaints from right-holders and broadcasters, the UK’s Intellectual Property Office, or IPO, is purportedly holding a number of meetings to decide whether the law needs to be changed to tackle the popularity of Kodi boxes.

There have already been a number of arrests due to Kodi boxes in the UK.

Five people accused of selling illegally modified versions of the popular set-top boxes were taken into custody last month after a series of early morning raids.

Cases are pending, but there is clearly a focus on these boxes.

For those who do not know, Kodi is an open-source media player that’s available to install on a range of devices.
